Income Tax Appellate Tribunal
The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) was set up on January 1941. It is the first of the many tribunals set up in India. it is first independent appellate body. To ensure complete independence, it comes under the aegis of the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice. Orders passed by the ITAT can be subjected to appellate challenge before the respective High Courts.
India has appointed 13 members to the ITAT, days after the Supreme Court reprimanded the delays in the filling of vacancies. The members will serve a tenure of five-years or until they turn 65 years old.
