India Bolsters Water Management and Conservation Efforts

In recent times, the issue of water scarcity has come to the forefront of environmental debates. An effective water management strategy is vital for ensuring the sustainable use of this precious resource. The Indian government has been implementing various initiatives and interventions to counteract water scarcity and conserve water resources. This article will explore these initiatives in detail.

National Perspective Plan for Interlinking of Rivers

The National Perspective Plan for Interlinking of Rivers was conceived in 1980 with the objective of transferring water from surplus basins to deficit areas. The National Water Development Agency (NWDA) identified 30 interlinking projects under this initiative. However, the success of these projects hinges on consensus on water sharing between the participating States.

National Aquifer Mapping and Management Program (NAQUIM)

The NAQUIM, overseen by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), focuses on managing and regulating groundwater resources across India. The program maps and characterizes water-bearing formations, creating Aquifer Management Plans for sustainable resource management.

Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) – Har Khet Ko Paani (HKKP) – Ground Water (GW)

Launched with the goal of enhancing farm water access and promoting efficient irrigation, the PMKSY-HKKP-GW encourages water use efficiency at the farm level through micro-irrigation. Alongside the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, it endorses the “Per Drop More Crop” approach, emphasizing water conservation at the farm level.

Mission Amrit Sarovar

Mission Amrit Sarovar, launched as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, seeks to conserve water bodies by developing and rejuvenating 75 water bodies in each district.

Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)

The JJM aims to provide potable tap water to every rural household by 2024, with a focus on water-scarce and drought-prone areas. The mission also includes schemes for bulk water transfer and regional water supply.

Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA)

The JSA was conducted in water-stressed districts to promote water conservation and management. The “Catch the Rain” campaign aims to capture rainwater where and when it falls.

Water Use Efficiency and Performance Evaluation Studies

The Central Water Commission (CWC) promotes studies for irrigation projects that focus on improving water use efficiency and conservation practices.

Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABY)

The ABY emphasizes community participation and demand-side interventions in water-stressed areas in several states, including Haryana, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.

National Commission on Integrated Water Resources Development (NCIWRD)

The NCIWRD provides information on projected water requirements for different scenarios, providing insights for the planning and management of water resources.

National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA)

The NDMA utilizes water-related data and technologies for disaster alerts and management. It uses platforms like NavIC for timely dissemination of alerts.

“Sahi Fasal” Campaign

The “Sahi Fasal” campaign encourages water-efficient crop choices in water-stressed areas. This initiative promotes economically viable and sustainable crop cultivation practices.

It’s crucial that these government initiatives are implemented diligently and effectively. Efficient water resource management can help mitigate the pressing issue of water scarcity, contributing to the sustainable utilization of this invaluable natural resource.
