The 15th of January marks an important day in the history of India – Army Day. It is a day set aside every year to remember and celebrate the soldiers of the Indian Army, along with its formation and accomplishments. This year, India proudly commemorates its 73rd Army Day.
A Peek into the Historical Background
On January 15th, 1949, Lieutenant General Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. He received his position from General Sir Francis Butcher, the final British person to hold the title. Cariappa established the slogan ‘Jai Hind,’ which translates to ‘Victory of India.’ He holds the distinction of being one of two Indian Army officers to hold the five-star rank of Field Marshal. The other esteemed officer to hold this rank is Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.
Army Day: A Salute to Selfless Warriors
Army Day provides an opportunity to honor the brave soldiers who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to their country. Their profound sense of duty, remarkable spirit of brotherhood, and deep love for their homeland are exemplary. To mark Army Day, a parade is held annually at the Cariappa Parade Ground of Delhi Cantonment. This celebration acts as a tribute to those who serve their country selflessly, putting their country before themselves.
The Genesis and Growth of the Indian Army
The origins of the Indian Army can be traced back to the forces of the East India Company. This subsequently became the ‘British Indian Army’ and, following India’s independence, it evolved into the Indian Army. The institution was initially established by the British nearly 126 years ago, on April 1, 1895.
Today, the Indian Army has gained significant international recognition and respect. As indicated by the Global Fire Power Index 2021, the Indian Army is regarded as the world’s fourth most potent army.
Understanding the Global Fire Power Index
The rankings provided by the Global Fire Power Index are assembled after evaluating countries based on 50 different aspects. These parameters cover a wide range of categories, including military resources, natural resources, industry, geographical features, and available manpower. In this comprehensive analysis, the Indian Army has emerged as a formidable force, securing a place amongst the world’s strongest armies.
This recognition testifies to the strength, resilience, and dedication of the Indian Army. As the nation celebrates Army Day, we remember our brave soldiers’ immense sacrifices and express our unwavering gratitude for their invaluable service.
