India Energy Forum Discusses Country’s Growing Energy Demand

The recently held India Ministerial Dialogue at the 3rd India Energy Forum by CERAWeek in New Delhi set the stage for important conversations about energy consumption and sustainability. The forum saw participation from Indian and regional energy companies, institutions, and governments, all convening under the patronage of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

India’s Role in Global Energy Demand

With India experiencing rapid growth in energy consumption, it is poised to become the primary driver of global energy demand in the coming decades. This rings especially true considering that its growth in energy consumption outpaces all other large economies worldwide. As India grapples with this escalating demand, it has indicated plans to implement a diverse mix of all commercially viable energy sources, setting the stage for potential influence on global energy transitions.

The Energy Transition Plan

India’s planned energy transition is designed with responsibility in mind. Over recent years, there has been a significant increase in the shares of renewable energy in electricity capacity – from around 10% in the year 2014-15 to 22% now. In addition to this, the ethanol blending percentage has experienced an increase from 0.67% in 2012-13 to almost 6% now.

The country has also made strides towards improving access to LPG, with more than 95% of households now having access to it, aiding in making their kitchens smoke-free. The focus on such transitions underscore how India is addressing critical changes needed in mobility, urbanization, and power generation sectors towards creating a sustainable and efficient energy system.

Emphasizing Cleaner Technology

Despite India’s per capita consumption of coal being about one-tenth of that consumed by the United States, the nation is committed to using cleaner technology for a low-carbon energy future. In line with this goal, India is also planning a transition towards becoming a Gas Economy, considering Natural Gas as a balancing fuel, given its proven ability to complement renewables.

Promotion of Modern Technologies

Acknowledging the role of modern technologies, the country has recognized technological advancements and efficiency in production for transforming the landscape towards climate justice and a sustainable future.

Parameters Data
Renewable energy capacity 2014-15 10%
Renewable energy capacity now 22%
Ethanol blending percentage 2012-13 0.67%
Ethanol blending percentage now 6%
Households with access to LPG 95%

About CERAWeek

CERAWeek by IHS Markit has established itself as the world’s premier energy event since its inception in 1983, when Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA) was founded in Cambridge. Initially, clients gathered for a few days each year in Houston, Texas, to gain insight into the energy future while networking with peers. The program later expanded to five days, offering more comprehensive sessions and networking opportunities. This made CERAWeek a pioneering platform for insightful conversations about the direction of global energy trends.
