India–France Aerospace Push Takes Flight

India–France Aerospace Push Takes Flight

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron have virtually inaugurated the Final Assembly Line (FAL) for H125 helicopters at Vemagal Industrial Area in Kolar, Karnataka. The facility marks India’s first private-sector helicopter manufacturing plant and signals a decisive shift from defence procurement to defence production. The development, alongside the C295 aircraft programme in Gujarat, reflects deepening India–France aerospace cooperation under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat framework.

What Was Inaugurated at Vemagal?

The Final Assembly Line for the H125 helicopter has been set up in collaboration with Airbus at Vemagal near Bengaluru.

Key features of the facility:

  • India’s first private-sector helicopter manufacturing unit.
  • Initial production capacity of 10 helicopters per year.
  • Potential scale-up to meet demand of 500 units over 20 years.
  • First “Made in India” H125 expected by early 2027.

The plant will cater to both domestic requirements and export markets in neighbouring countries, positioning India as a regional rotorcraft hub.

Why the H125 Helicopter Matters

The H125 is a globally recognised single-engine helicopter known for its “hot and high” performance. It holds the record for landing on Mount Everest, making it particularly suited for mountainous and high-altitude operations.

It is used for:

  • Civil aviation and tourism.
  • Emergency medical services.
  • Law enforcement and surveillance.
  • High-altitude logistics support.

Plans are also underway to manufacture the H125M — its military variant — at the same facility to support Indian Armed Forces requirements.

Parallel Milestone: The C295 Programme

The helicopter initiative complements the C295 transport aircraft programme in Gujarat.

Airbus C295 aircraft are being manufactured in Vadodara for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Of the 56 aircraft ordered:

  • 16 have been delivered from Spain.
  • 40 are being manufactured in India.

The project has onboarded 37 Indian suppliers, with approximately 70% of components sourced domestically — indicating deep localisation.

The first India-manufactured C295 is expected to roll out by September 2026.

Strategic Significance of the Dual-Track Partnership

The twin projects — H125 in Karnataka and C295 in Gujarat — represent a structural shift in India’s defence industrial policy.

Their strategic importance lies in:

  1. Technology transfer and domestic capability creation.
  2. Development of a full aerospace supply chain ecosystem.
  3. Reduced reliance on direct imports.
  4. Export potential in the global rotorcraft and transport aircraft market.

The collaboration aligns with India’s emphasis on self-reliance while maintaining strategic partnerships with trusted nations.

Economic and Employment Impact

The aerospace push is expected to generate over 10,000 jobs across manufacturing, design, testing, and supply chain management.

Beyond direct employment, it fosters:

  • Precision engineering capabilities.
  • Skill development in high-technology sectors.
  • Integration of MSMEs into global supply chains.

Such industrial ecosystems are critical for India’s long-term ambition to become a global aerospace manufacturing hub.

India–France Strategic Context

Narendra Modi and Emmanuel Macron have strengthened bilateral defence cooperation in recent years, with France emerging as a key partner in India’s defence modernisation.

The partnership reflects:

  • Shared Indo-Pacific interests.
  • France’s willingness to transfer technology.
  • India’s pursuit of strategic autonomy.

The inauguration coincided with the India–France Annual Defence Dialogue, attended in person by Defence Ministers from both countries.
