India has recently taken a significant step towards combating health threats by becoming a new member of the Global Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Research and Development (R&D) Hub. This collaboration will help India to enhance existing resources, capabilities, and concentrate on innovative R&D interventions to counter drug-resistant infections prevalent in the country.
Understanding the Global AMR R&D Hub
The Global Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Research and Development (R&D) Hub consists of a consortium of 16 countries, two philanthropic foundations, and four international organizations observing. Established in Berlin, Germany, the hub was introduced in 2018 during the 71st session of the World Health Assembly following an appeal from G20 Leaders in the previous year.
The fundamental aim of the Global AMR R&D Hub is to refine coordination of international efforts devoted to tackling Antimicrobial Resistance. Additionally, it seeks to progressively increase investments into R&D for AMR.
Aligning with Other Global Organizations
The operations of the Global AMR R&D Hub align with the priorities outlined by several globally recognized health organizations. These include the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
Implementing the One Health Approach
A crucial aspect of the AMR R&D Hub’s approach is its enforcement of the One Health approach, addressing antimicrobial resistance comprehensively by integrating environmental aspects and veterinary medicine.
