India Ranks 140th in 2019 Press Freedom Index

The Press Freedom Index is a dynamic tool that allows for the measurement of media freedom across 180 countries worldwide. It has been consistently published every year by Reporters Without Borders since its inception in 2002. Following this evaluation system, India was ranked 140 out of the 180 nations in the Press Freedom Index of 2019. Generally, higher ranks and scores are indicative of lesser freedom of the press within any given country. The degree of this freedom is ascertained through the collective responses of various professionals in the media industry, including lawyers and sociologists, to a set of queries. These responses shed light on various dimensions of media functioning such as the level of pluralism, media independence, environmental influence and self-censorship, legal framework, transparency, and the quality of infrastructure that enables production of news and information.

Understanding the Press Freedom Index

The Press Freedom Index is unique in its ability to gauge the level of freedom that journalistic entities exercise in their conduct of presenting news and information. This index is significantly influenced by a variety of factors, including but not limited to the political landscape of a country, societal attitudes towards free speech, and the extent to which governments respect and uphold the right to free expression.

Evaluating Factors of Press Freedom

Responses to a questionnaire, completed by media professionals, lawyers, and sociologists, form the backbone of the Press Freedom Index. The breadth of parameters that this questionnaire explores, contribute to forming a comprehensive understanding of the state of press freedom in a country. The factors include the level of pluralism or diversity of voices in the media, media independence or the autonomy of the media from political pressures, environment and self-censorship, legal framework governing the media, transparency in operation of media houses, and the quality of infrastructure supporting news production.

Case Study: India’s Ranking

In the 2019 Press Freedom Index, India ranked 140 out of 180 countries. This indicates a relatively lower degree of press freedom as higher ranks correspond to lower freedom. The ranking takes into account several facets such as pluralism in media, extent of independence from external pressures, societal and self-censorship, transparency in operation, and quality of infrastructure for news production. Despite the apparent scarcity of freedom, the Indian media landscape showcases a rich diversity reflecting the myriad languages and cultures within the country.
