India Removes Import Duty on Rare Disease Medications

India is known for its rich and diverse culture, as well as its scientific achievements and commitment to the health sector. This article explores various aspects of India’s progress and events including medical, astronomical, historical, and cultural developments.

India: A Relief for Rare Disease Patients

In a major relief for patients suffering from rare diseases, the Indian government has exempted basic customs duty on all drugs and food items imported for personal use for treatment. This exemption, which comes into effect starting April 1, 2023, spans various medications like Pembrolizumab (Keytruda), used in cancer treatments. Prior to this, the government had offered exemptions for medicines used in the treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy or Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

For those seeking this benefit, they need to present a certificate from Central or State Director Health Services or District Medical Officer/Civil Surgeon of their respective districts. With treatments for rare diseases often being prohibitively expensive, this decision is expected to result in significant cost savings for patients.

ISRO’s EOS-06 Satellite: Capturing Global Earth Mosaic

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently released a Global False Colour Composite (FCC) mosaic of images. These images were captured by the Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM) payload aboard the EOS-06 satellite, launched in November 2021. The OCM senses the Earth in 13 distinct wavelengths, helping scientists gather detailed information about global vegetation cover and ocean biota.

Equipped with four payloads, the EOS-06 satellite is the third generation in ISRO’s Oceansat series, observing ocean colour data, sea surface temperature, and wind vector data. This leads to wide-ranging implications for climate and meteorological study applications.
