India-Uzbekistan Solar Energy Pact Approved

The Union Cabinet, in a significant move to enhance bilateral cooperation, has recently sanctioned an agreement between India and Uzbekistan focusing on the development of solar energy. This decision underscores the commitment of both nations to leverage renewable energy for sustainable growth and climate change mitigation.

Ex-Facto Approval by the Union Cabinet

The Cabinet, which operates under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its ex-facto approval for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uzbekistan. The MoU is centered around collaborative efforts in the solar energy sector. The aim is to strengthen ties between the two countries by sharing knowledge, technical expertise, and resources to promote the use of solar energy.

Scope of the Agreement

The primary focus of the newly approved agreement lies in the identification and execution of demonstration, research, and pilot projects. These projects are to be jointly conducted by the International Solar Energy Institute (ISEI) of Uzbekistan and the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), which falls under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India. The collaboration will explore various facets of solar energy including technology transfer, storage technologies, and solar photovoltaic systems.

Implementation and Deployment in ISA Member Countries

A notable aspect of the agreement is the implementation and deployment of significant solar energy projects in member countries of the International Solar Alliance (ISA). The institutes from India and Uzbekistan will combine their efforts to advance solar energy projects, potentially impacting a wide range of ISA member nations by providing them with sustainable energy solutions.

The International Solar Alliance (ISA)

The International Solar Alliance is a testament to India’s proactive approach to promoting solar energy globally. Initiated by Prime Minister Modi in 2015 and inaugurated by him alongside French President François Hollande in 2016, the ISA has grown to include 121 member countries. With its headquarters in Gurugram, Haryana, the ISA serves as a platform for collaboration among sun-rich countries to harness solar energy efficiently and maximize the utilization of solar resources.

Through this agreement and the work of the ISA, India and Uzbekistan are setting a precedent for international cooperation in renewable energy, showcasing their commitment to a sustainable future and the fight against climate change.
