Tinospora cordifolia, commonly known as Giloy, is a medicinal plant indigenous to tropical regions in the Indian subcontinent. It has been used for centuries in ayurvedic formulations as well as in pharmaceuticals. It is used for treating various health ailments, including COVID-19 infection. It is used in prophylactic care as well as in therapeutic applications.
Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal sequenced the genome of Giloy for the first time in the world. The genome and transcriptome sequencing will provide more insights into the genomic basis for the plantÂ’s medicinal properties.
