India welcomes Sudan’s removal from State Sponsors of Terrorism List.

Sudan was removed from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism on November 9, 2020. India has welcomed theremoval of Sudan from the list. Apart from that, India also welcomed the normalisation of Sudan’s relations with Israel.

Highlights

India highlighted that its relations with Sudan are historic, special and forged based on the shared values and close people-to-people contacts.India also congratulated the Transitional Government and the people of Sudan upon signing of the Juba Peace Agreement.

Sudan-Israel ties

Sudan recently normalised its ties with the Israel. In doing so, it has become the third Arab nation after UAE and Bahrain that have normalised the relations with Israel. Sudan have agreed to recognise Israel and normalise ties. The deal of normalising ties between both the countries was initiated by the help of US President Donald Trump.

Peace Deal

The US President had initiated the peace deal between the two nations on October 23, 2020. In the US-led peace deal, Israel and Sudan discussed the opening up of economic and trade relations. The primary focus was given on agriculture. However, the official diplomatic ties would be established in future.

Sudan’s removal from Terrorism List

The decision of removing Sudan from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism is taken in the backdrop of Sudan’s normalisation of ties with Israel in October 2020. The former President of US, Trump, had announced on October 19, 2020 that he will remove Sudan from the terrorism list after Sudan deposit USD335 million as pledged to pay in compensation. Sudan paid the compensation amount as decided.
