Indian Army Celebrates 75th Army Day

The Indian Army recently commemorated its 75th Army Day, an important milestone in the country’s rich military history. In addition, an increasing occurrence of avalanches in the Kashmir region raises safety concerns for the ongoing Zojila tunnel project. Meanwhile, the recent CII Business Confidence Index reflects a positive outlook for India’s economy despite global uncertainties. Lastly, Delhi’s State EIA Authority is calling for action against invasive tree species that threaten the local ecology.

India’s 75th Army Day: A Tribute to National Heroes

Marking its 75th anniversary on 15th January, Army Day is a significant event in India’s military history. The day is ingrained in the national consciousness as it marks Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa taking over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in 1949, replacing his British counterpart. Notably, Cariappa was one of the only two Army officers to be bestowed the five-star rank of Field Marshal.

Army Day is a salute to the country’s soldiers who set unparalleled examples of selfless service, brotherhood, and patriotism. However, it should not be mistaken with Veterans Army Day, celebrated a day before, honoring the formal retirement of Field Marshal KM Cariappa from the Services.

Avalanche Warnings in Jammu & Kashmir

Recent days have seen a concerning increase in avalanches in the region of Kashmir, where the monumental Zojila tunnel project is underway. Avalanche warnings have been raised, designating a ‘low-danger level’ for 11 districts. An avalanche, primarily triggered by humans, is a sudden mass of snow, ice, and rocks tumbling down a mountainside. Avalanches can occur unanticipatedly and potentially pose lethal consequences.

A Promising Outlook: The Business Confidence Index

The latest Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) Business Confidence Index for the Oct-Dec 2022 quarter reflects optimism for Indian businesses. The Index, rebounded to a two-year high of 67.6, from 62.2 in the previous quarter, suggesting that India remains a safe harbor amidst rising global economic uncertainties. The OECD explains that a Business Confidence Index offers insights into future developments based on surveys carried out in the industry sector.

Curbing Invasive Tree Species: A Call to Action

The State Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Authority in Delhi has urged the State Forest Department to contain and exterminate three fast-growing invasive tree species that are detrimentally affecting local ecology. These include Vilayati Kikar (Prosopis Juliflora), Subabul (River Tamarind), and Eucalyptus. Introduced by foreign entities, these species are depleting the groundwater table and hampering the growth of native flora due to their invasive nature and excessive water consumption.
