The Indian Navy has recently announced the induction of the indigenously developed heavyweight torpedo, “Varunastra”, making India part of an elite group of eight countries that can manufacture such advanced torpedoes. This underwater weapon is known for its high level of intelligence in tracing its target and boasts an advanced automatic and remote-controlled guidance system, which further enhances the country’s maritime defence capabilities.
Understanding Torpedoes
A torpedo is a self-propelled missile, shaped like a cigar, which operates underwater and can be launched from a variety of platforms including submarines, surface vessels, or airplanes. It is designed to explode upon contact with the hulls of surface vessels or submarines. Being a potent tool in naval warfare, it plays a significant role in shaping the power dynamics of navies around the globe.
Features of Varunastra
One of the most intriguing aspects of Varunastra is its capability to hit stealth submarines underwater. Measuring seven to eight meters in length and weighing approximately 1500 kg, Varunastra comes with a diameter of 533 mm, marking it as one of the heaviest torpedoes. It’s a ship-launched, electrically-propelled underwater weapon that can travel at an impressive speed of 40 knots or 74 kilometres per hour. Moreover, with an operational range of 40 km, it can carry a warhead weighing up to 250 kg.
| Torpedo Name | Length | Weight | Diameter | Speed | Operational Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varunastra | 7-8 meters | 1500 kg | 533 mm | 40 knots or 74 kmph | 40 km |
Developing Varunastra: A Joint Effort
Varunastra is the result of a joint effort between the Naval Science and Technology Laboratory (NTSL), Visakhapatnam, and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Hyderabad. NTSL, established on August 20, 1969, has been actively involved in research and development to make the Indian Navy self-reliant with major naval systems like Underwater Mines, Torpedoes, Fire Control Systems, Weapon Launchers, Targets, Decoys, etc.
On the other hand, BDL, a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, was established in Hyderabad in the year 1970. It was created as a manufacturing base for guided missiles and allied defence equipment. This collaborative effort to develop Varunastra stands as a testament to India’s growing expertise in indigenous defence technology.
