In development for the Indian Navy, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has delivered the first of eight anti-submarine warfare (ASW) shallow water crafts. This delivery enhances the Navy’s capabilities in patrolling coastal waters where enemy submarines may operate. The vessel, named INS Arnala, is designed to conduct extensive sub-surface surveillance and coordinated anti-submarine operations.
INS Arnala
INS Arnala measures 77.6 metres in length and 10.5 metres in width. It is engineered for full-scale surveillance of coastal areas. The craft can search for and attack potential submarine threats. The ship is also capable of coordinating operations with aircraft, thereby amplifying its operational effectiveness.
Construction and Collaboration
The construction of INS Arnala was executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. GRSE collaborated with L&T Kattupalli, a private shipyard located in Tamil Nadu. This partnership reflects a strategic move to leverage private sector efficiency in defence manufacturing.
Indigenous Content and Recognition
INS Arnala boasts nearly 88 per cent indigenous content, showcasing India’s growing self-reliance in defence production. Following the delivery of INS Arnala, GRSE is engaged in the construction of 16 additional warships.
