Indian PM Attends 16th India-ASEAN Summit in Bangkok

The Prime Minister of India marked his presence at the 16th India-ASEAN Summit which was held in Bangkok, Thailand on November 03, 2019. This gathering is of high importance as it facilitates multilateral interactions and dialogues promoting cooperation and strategic partnerships between the member countries.

The Summits in Thailand

Alongside the 16th India-ASEAN Summit, other crucial meetings were also being hosted in Thailand. These included the 35th ASEAN Summit, the 14th East Asia Summit, and the 3rd RCEP meeting. In all these summits, the primary focus was levied on promoting India-ASEAN strategic partnership, enhancing maritime security and blue economy, increasing cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, science, technology, and innovation.

Socio-Cultural Aspect of the Meeting

Furthermore, there were also discussions about amplifying people-to-people connectivity, cultural exchanges, humanitarian aid, and boosting tourism. All these points contribute to fostering a better socio-cultural understanding and collaborative efforts amongst the countries.

The Indo-Pacific Vision and ASEAN Outlook

The Indian Prime Minister highlighted the importance of sustaining strategic balance within the region which has been witnessing escalating Chinese assertiveness lately. He emphasized the mutual coordination between India’s vision of the Indo-Pacific region and the ASEAN Outlook to maintain this equilibrium.

The RCEP Summit and Trade Negotiations

During the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit, the trade negotiation deal is yet to be finalized. The decision is awaited after considering all the issues that concern Indian interests in trade goods, services, and investments.

India’s Relations with Myanmar, Indonesia, and Thailand

On his visit to Bangkok, the Indian PM held several bilateral meetings with other world leaders. Key discussions revolved around improving physical connectivity, capacity expansion program for Myanmar, strengthening ties with Indonesia in several areas, and exploring cooperative opportunities in diverse sectors with Thailand. These meetings underline the importance of regional partnerships in maintaining peace, security, and prosperity.
