The exploration of our universe has taken another leap as Indian researchers, based at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune, India, and Leiden University, Netherlands, have recently discovered nearly 400 new giant radio galaxies (GRGs). These unique and massive structures provide exciting new insights into our understanding of the universe.
Understanding Radio Galaxies
Galaxies are not just clusters of stars; they are much more complex entities. Within the billions of galaxies that exist, many harbor supermassive black holes at their centers. Some of these black holes exhibit high levels of activity, propelling jets at near-light speed across the cosmos.
A black hole is defined as a region of space where gravity exerts such a powerful pull that not even light can escape its grip. These mind-bending phenomena occur when matter has been condensed into an incredibly small space, usually during the death throes of a star.
The jets produced by active black holes can be detected through special radio wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. This is why galaxies with active, jet-producing black holes are labeled as ‘radio galaxies’. These cosmic powerhouses emit a significant amount of electromagnetic radiation or radio waves, although detecting this weak radio luminosity requires highly sensitive radio telescopes.
The Discovery of Giant Radio Galaxies
However, not all radio galaxies stick to a standard size. When a radio galaxy exceeds expectations by spanning more than 33 lakh light years, it enters the category of a giant radio galaxy, or GRG.
GRGs first revealed themselves to us in 1974, but until 2016, the count of known GRGs stood at a mere 300. The latest research now increases that total to over 800. There remains a lot of mystery around these cosmic titans – exactly how they achieve their vast scales and what fuels their respective black holes is still not fully understood. The length of the jets emitted by GRGs can provide clues to the power and activity level of their black holes, as well as information about the density of the black hole’s environment.

The study of GRGs is far from a purely academic exercise. By furthering our understanding of these fascinating structures, we can garner vital clues to unveil how these supermassive black holes accumulate mass and achieve the efficiency needed to produce their awe-inspiring jets.
