Recently, India is set to enhance its air mobility capabilities by procuring an additional 15 C-295 transport aircraft from Airbus. The programme aims to increase indigenous content . Initially, the indigenisation level was set at 48%, escalating to 75% for the remaining aircraft. The C-295 will also be equipped with an Electronic Warfare Suite developed by Indian companies, enhancing its operational capabilities. This focus on local manufacturing not only supports national security but also promotes technological advancements within the aerospace sector.
Impact on the Defence Sector
The C-295 project is expected to create approximately 600 direct jobs and over 3,000 indirect jobs, along with an additional 3,000 medium-skill employment opportunities. The transfer of manufacturing expertise from Spain to India will increase local man-hours dedicated to aircraft production, with a gradual rise from 78% to 96% for the latter aircraft.
Strategic Importance and Future Prospects
The C-295 is set to replace the ageing HS-748 Avro aircraft in the Indian Air Force (IAF). This transition is crucial for modernising India’s airlift capabilities, particularly for maritime reconnaissance roles, which are essential for national security. The first C-295 from the Vadodara facility is slated for rollout in September 2026, with a full delivery schedule extending to 2031.
