India’s first electronic waste (e-waste) clinic for the segregation, processing, and disposal of waste from household and commercial units will soon become operational in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This initiative marks a significant step towards the more responsible and scientific handling of electronic waste in the country.
E-Waste Clinic: An Innovative Step Towards Sustainable Waste Management
The e-waste clinic is a three-month pilot project initiated with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC). If successful, the same model could be introduced across India.
In this unique setup, electronic waste can either be collected from door to door or directly deposited at the clinic by individuals. Undertaking the task of providing technical support at the unit, the CPCB ensures that collected hazardous waste is sent to Bengaluru for proper recycling.
Compliance with Solid Waste Management Rules
This initiative falls in line with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, emphasizing the segregation of waste at source, charging user fees for collection, disposal, and processing from the bulk generator. By facilitating safe disposal mechanisms, the clinic aims to prevent defunct and useless electrical or electronic devices from being discarded along with household waste.
| Type of Waste | Method of Disposal |
|---|---|
| Electronic waste | Collected and sent to Bengaluru for recycling |
| Solid waste | Segregated at source, collected and processed |
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB): Role and Responsibilities
Created in September 1974 under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, the CPCB is a statutory organization. It was assigned powers and functions under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.
The principal role of the CPCB includes promoting cleanliness of streams and wells in various parts of the States through the prevention, control, and abatement of water pollution. It also aims to improve air quality and prevent, control or reduce air pollution throughout the country. The CPCB provides technical services to the Ministry of Environment and Forests concerning the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
This e-waste clinic in Bhopal represents an important move towards the comprehensive and scientific management of electronic waste, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable India. As technology advances, so does the volume of e-waste generated. Therefore, initiatives like these are vital for maintaining the balance between technological progression and environmental sustainability.
