The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA) has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India (GoI). The MoU marks the setting of an annual performance target for the fiscal year 2022-23. Alongside this, there are several key parameters based on performance that have been set by the GoI.
Understanding the Parameters
Among these parameters are Return on Net Worth (RoNW), Return on Capital Employed (ROCE), Non-Performing Assets (NPA) to Total Loans, Asset Turnover Ratio and Earning Per Share (EPS).
RoNW, also known as Return on Equity (RoE), is a measure of a company’s profit or earnings that are generated purely from its shareholders’ equity. ROCE is a financial ratio used to quantify a company’s profitability and efficiency of capital use.
Next comes the Asset Turnover Ratio, which helps determine the value of a company’s sales or revenues in relation to the value of its assets. EPS is typically calculated by dividing a company’s profit by the outstanding shares of its common stock.
Caste Census in Bihar
Bihar’s decision to conduct a caste survey was recently under fire from petitioners who claimed it was a census, and the state government lacked the power to legislate it. However, the Supreme Court dismissed these petitions.
Censuses in India trace back to colonial times with the first formal exercise conducted in 1881. Over time, they’ve evolved to serve various purposes such as resource allocation, social change mapping, delimitation exercises, and more by governments, policymakers, academics and others.
Moreover, while the census provides an overall picture of the Indian population, the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) is a tool for identifying state support beneficiaries.
Hakku Patra: Empowering Nomadic Tribes
In a symbolic gesture, the Indian Prime Minister recently handed out Hakku Patra (land title deeds) to five families of the Banjara (Lambani) community, a nomadic Scheduled Caste group. This event was organized by the state Revenue Department in Karnataka.
A Hakku Patra is a property ownership document and the bearer of this document is considered the owner of the mentioned land. Once granted, these title deeds not only enable the owners to avail bank loans but also give them the rights to buy or sell the land.
Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) and Privacy Concerns
The Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) of India recently proposed that the names of callers be displayed, a plan that has raised privacy concerns among telecom operators. Known as Caller Name Presentation (CNAP), this proposal could be tough to implement technically, given that many phones in the Indian market may not support this feature.
Despite these concerns, CNAP aims to inform users of the identity of the person calling them, enabling them to make more informed choices about the calls they receive. Furthermore, this initiative could potentially help deter harassment and other spam calls. Currently, there are some third-party apps providing similar services, however, these depend on crowd-sourced data and there’s no unified solution offered by telecom operators.
