The Union Government initiated the Island Development Agency (IDA) on the 1st of June, 2017, to focus on developing the islands. The recent happening in its regard is the sixth meeting conducted in New Delhi where the advances made under the Holistic development of islands program were assessed. The chief of these meetings has consistently been the Union Home Minister.
Island Development Agency
Established in 2017, the Island Development Agency was instituted by the Union Government. This agency’s primary purpose is to supervise and direct the sustainable growth of identified islands within their scientifically assessed carrying capacity. The union home minister presides over the Agency meetings, the most recent of which was the sixth one held recently in New Delhi.
Holistic Development of Islands Program
Under the guidance of the IDA, for the first time in the country, a project of sustainable development has been undertaken in the identified islands that lie within the scientifically-assessed carrying capacity. A series of Development Plans have been drafted and are under implementation in four islands of Andaman & Nicobar and five islands of Lakshadweep.
These plans aim to create employment opportunities for the islanders. There is a particular emphasis on boosting tourism as well as promoting exports of seafood and coconut-based products made in the islands.
Second Phase of the Program
Following the initial phase, in the second stage of the program, suitable locations across 12 more islands of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and five more islands in Lakshadweep have been included.
