Japan Tops 2020 Henley Passport Index; India Ranks 84th

The Henley & Partners, a leading global firm in residence and citizenship planning, has released the 2020 edition of its comprehensive “Henley Passport Index”. The index offers insights into passport holders’ freedom to travel across the globe without requiring a prior visa. The data is sourced from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which incorporates detailed information from roughly 290 airlines, including all major carriers.

The Scope of the Henley Passport Index

The Henley Passport Index, initiated in 2006, includes a total of 199 passports and 227 different travel destinations. The primary objective of this comprehensive ranking system is to shed light on global trends and patterns related to travel freedoms. The index allows individuals and governments to understand the strength of their passports and how it compares to others globally.

Highlights: World’s Strongest And Weakest Passports

In the 2020 rankings, Japan stands as the country with the most powerful passport, marking its third consecutive year on top of the index. On the other end of the spectrum, Afghanistan, at the 107th position, holds the weakest passport.

Singapore, Germany, and South Korea: Close Contenders

Following Japan on the index, Singapore maintains its second place, identical to its ranking in 2019. Germany and South Korea have both clinched the third spot in the ranking.

The Indian Passport: A Closer Look

The Indian passport finds itself closer to the tail-end of the ranking list, settling at the 84th position. This represents a decline from previous years, with the Indian passport ranking 82nd in 2019 and 81st in 2018. The only European country that Indian passport holders can travel to visa-free is Serbia. Notably, there are no major or developed countries that offer visa-free access to Indian passport holders.

The USA And UK: A Marked Decline

The passports of the USA and UK experienced a significant drop in the rankings, with both countries jointly placed 8th in 2020. This is a considerable downgrade from their joint first-place ranking in 2015.
