Kalasa Banduri Project Faces Environmental Clearance Issues

The Kalasa Banduri Project, the Assam floods and Beki River, biodegradable utensils developed by BIS, and migrant crisis in Spain’s Canary Islands are topics of recent prominence. This article provides an overview of these situations, outlining their significance, challenges, and implications.

Obstacles to the Controversial Kalasa Banduri Project

The controversial Kalasa Banduri Project stands at a critical juncture due to the absence of essential environmental and forest clearances. Initiated by the previous Karnataka government right before the assembly elections, this project intends to enhance the drinking water supply to Belagavi, Dharwad, Bagalkot, and Gadag districts in Karnataka. The project includes constructing barrages across Kalasa and Banduri, the tributaries of the Mahadayi River, aiming to divert water to the Malaprabha river. However, it has sparked inter-state water disputes, environmental apprehensions, and opposition by local communities.

Assam Flood Crisis and Threat to Beki River

The flood situation escalates in Assam, affecting nearly 20 districts due to unending rainfall. Beki, a tributary of the Brahmaputra River, is flowing above the danger mark causing significant damage to infrastructure such as embankments, roads, and bridges. Originating from Bhutan (also known as Kurissu River), Beki serves as a significant source of livelihood and transportation for many communities.

BIS Introduces Biodegradable Utensils Standard

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has recently published IS 18267: 2023 “Food Serving Utensils Made from Agri By-Products – Specification” to tackle plastic pollution and endorse sustainability. The standard covers all areas such as raw materials, manufacturing techniques, performance, and hygiene requirements essential for the production of biodegradable utensils. These utensils are devoid of harmful additives, ensuring consumer well-being, and they open-up economic avenues for farmers while supporting sustainable agricultural practices.

Migrant Crisis in Canary Islands

According to reports from two migrant-focussed organizations, more than 30 migrants tragically lost their lives when their boat sank en route to Spain’s Canary Islands. Positioned in the Atlantic Ocean, these islands are a Spanish archipelago made up of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife provinces. These islands came into existence consequent to volcanic eruptions several million years ago.

Each of these stories offers insights into wider global issues, from environmental and water-related disputes to natural disasters, innovative steps towards sustainability, and migrant crises. Through understanding these developments, we can gain an enriched perspective on the world around us.
