Kanpur Emerging as Key Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Hub

Kanpur Emerging as Key Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Hub

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a major initiative to establish Kanpur as centre for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing. The project, with an investment of around Rs 700 crore, is part of the Kanpur Metropolitan Development Vision
2030. It aims to develop a state-of-the-art EV park spread over 500 acres near Bhimsen along the dedicated freight corridor. This move is expected to strengthen the local EV supply chain and boost the regional economy.

Project Overview and Investment

The EV park will be developed by the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The investment of Rs 700 crore is intended to create a comprehensive manufacturing ecosystem. This initiative is designed to position Kanpur as important player in India’s growing electric vehicle industry.

Manufacturing Facilities and Components

The park will host units producing key EV components such as electric motors, chassis, steel parts, and lithium-ion cells. Facilities for assembling lithium-ion batteries, chargers, controllers, and electronic components will also be established. This integrated approach will support end-to-end EV manufacturing within the region.

Research and Development Focus

A dedicated research and development (R&D) centre will be a core feature of the park. This centre will drive innovation and advanced product development. It aims to contribute to both local industrial growth and global advancements in EV technology. The R&D unit will encourage collaboration between industry and academia.

Support for SMEs and Employment Generation

Alongside the main park, an integrated EV components cluster is planned to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This cluster will enable local entrepreneurs and startups to produce parts and components. The initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities and boost entrepreneurship in the region.

Strategic Location and Connectivity

The park’s location near the dedicated freight corridor offers a strategic logistics advantage. It is well connected by rail and road networks, facilitating efficient transportation of raw materials and finished products. This connectivity will reduce costs and enhance supply chain efficiency.

Economic Impact and Future Prospects

The establishment of the EV park is expected to boost Uttar Pradesh’s industrial landscape. It will enhance the state’s contribution to India’s EV ecosystem and promote indigenous manufacturing. The project aligns with national goals of sustainable mobility and reduced carbon emissions.
