The Kanwar Yatra is a pilgrimage that falls on the Hindu month of Shravana. It involves Shiva devotees carrying pitchers of water from River Ganga or other sacred rivers to holy sites like Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand, Sultanganj in Bihar, and Prayagraj, Ayodhya or Varanasi from Uttar Pradesh.
The Uttar Pradesh Government has decided to hold the yatra with certain restrictions in place amid the COVID-19. This comes despite Uttarakhand government suspended it because of the pandemic fears. In this regard, the Supreme Court has sought response from the Centre and the state governments of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
