Karnataka’s Namma Cargo Service

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has launched the ‘Namma Cargo’ services at the Vidhana Soudha, Bangalore. Through Namma Cargo services, the State road transport corporations, barring the BMTC, will transport parcels to generate more revenue.

Key Points

  • The Namma Cargo service will be implemented across 109 bus stations in Karnataka and select locations in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
  • As per the estimates by the Transport Department, luggage revenue generation would go up to Rs 70 crore to Rs 80 crore a year.
  • Operations by the 3 road transport corporations Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), the North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC), and the North-Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC).
  • These three corporations cumulatively cover 51 lakh km with 14,500 schedules and carry 38 lakh passengers every day.
  • In phase 1 of the initiative, Namma Cargo will operate in 88 taluks in Karnataka and 21 inter-State locations.
  • The Transport Department also seeks to expand this service for providing home deliveries.
  • ‘Namma Cargo’ name was selected through a contest launched by KSRTC to suggest names for the parcel and cargo services.

This is not the first time that these transport corporations have ventured for any business. They have earlier also attempted such a business partnership in 2008 but failed.
