Koliwar Bridge inaugurated over Sone River

The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, has inaugurated the Koliwar Bridge over the Sone river in Bihar on December 10, 2020. The bridge has been constructed at the total outlay of Rupee 256 crores.

New Koliwar bridge

  • The Bridge replaces the existing two-Lane Bridge over the Sone river which is 138 years old.
  • The newly constructed bridge is a replace for both road and rail traffic.
  • The new bridge includes three lanes of carriageway.
  • This, this will subsequently reduce the traffic on NH-30 and on NH -922.
  • The bridge is also significant since it is the major link between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
  • The bridge is 1.52 km in length parallel to the old koliwar bridge.
  • It will be named after Indian mathematician andPadma Shri awardee Vashishtha Narayan Singh after the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway will approve it.

Koliwar Bridge

The Koliwar bridge was the longest bridge in India in between 1862 and 1900. This bridge was then inaugurated by the viceroy of India Lord Elgin. This bridge is also called the Abdul Bari Bridge in the honour of “Abdul Bari” who was an Indian academic and social reformer. This is a rail-cum-road bridge. It connects Patna and Arrah district of Bihar.

Sone River or Son River

Sone river is the major tributaries of river Ganges. The river have its origin in Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh. It is the largest southern tributary of river Ganga after River Yamuna. The river makes the border line between Bhojpuri speaking region and the Magahi-speaking region in Bihar.

Abdul Bari

He was the social reformer who wanted to make India free from all kinds of social inequality. He was the President of Tata Workers Union and made efforts in making India free from slavery and communal disharmony. He united the workers in the states of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa during the freedom struggles of the 1921, 1922 and 1942.
