Lagrange point

Lagrange point

India is set to launch its inaugural solar study mission, ‘Aditya L-1’, on September 19, 2023. The mission aims to comprehensively study the Sun using an array of telescopes and equipment positioned strategically at the L-1 Lagrange point in space. Equipped with seven payloads, the spacecraft will observe various layers of the Sun, providing insights into solar dynamics and their effects on space weather. The unique L-1 location offers an unobstructed view of the Sun, enabling uninterrupted observations and minimal fuel consumption. This mission holds the promise of advancing our understanding of solar phenomena.

Facts/Terms for UPSC Prelims

  • L-1 Lagrange Point: This is a location in space where the gravitational forces of two large bodies, like the Sun and Earth, create a point of balance. Objects placed at this point can maintain a relatively stable position, making it ideal for solar observation.
  • Space Weather: The conditions and phenomena in space, particularly the Sun’s activity, that can affect technologies on Earth and in space. Aditya L-1’s observations aim to enhance our understanding of space weather patterns.
  • Electromagnetic Waves: Electric and magnetic disturbances that propagate through space, including light. These waves carry energy and information, and studying them helps us comprehend various solar processes.
  • Coronal Ejections: Massive bursts of solar material and magnetic fields from the Sun’s corona. These ejections can impact space weather and satellite operations, and studying them aids in predicting their effects on Earth.
