Lockdown Spurs Use of Janaushadhi Sugam App for Medicine

With the onset of the Covid-19 crisis and the subsequent nationwide lockdown, people are increasingly turning to digital resources for assistance. One such aid that has gained widespread popularity is the Janaushadhi Sugam Mobile App. This mobile application allows individuals to locate their nearest Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendra (PMBJK) as well as check the availability and price of affordable generic medicines.

Understanding the Janaushadhi Sugam App

The Janaushadhi Sugam Mobile App has been developed by the Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India (BPPI), a unit operating under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. The main objective of this app is to facilitate easy access to generic medicines for all.

Users can use the app for several purposes, including:

1. Locating nearby Janaushadhi Kendras via Google Maps.
2. Searching for Janaushadhi generic medicines.
3. Analyzing product comparisons of generic versus branded medicines in terms of MRP and overall savings.

Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJK)

PMBJK facilities are established across the country as part of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), which aims to provide access to generic medicines. These medicines, which are marketed under approved names rather than brand names, are just as effective as their branded counterparts but significantly cheaper.

Patients opting for generic medicines can drastically cut down their expenditure on medical treatments. In comparison to the market prices of branded medicines, generic versions are sold at 50% to 90% lesser prices.

The Role of Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India (BPPI)

BPPI serves as the implementing agency for PMBJP – the scheme under which all these operations are conducted. All the medicines procured under this scheme undergo stringent quality assurance tests at NABL (National Accreditation Board Laboratories) accredited laboratories. Additionally, they comply with WHO GMP (World Health Organisation’s Good Manufacturing Practices) benchmarks to ensure top-notch quality and efficacy.

Government Support for PMBJKs

To further boost the reach and usage of PMBJKs, the government provides grants of up to 2.5 lakhs for setting up these centers. A variety of entities including doctors, pharmacists, entrepreneurs, Self Help Groups, NGOs, Charitable Societies, etc., can establish a PMBJK at any suitable location or even outside hospital premises. The goal is to make affordable healthcare accessible to all corners of the country.

Overall, digital resources like the Janaushadhi Sugam Mobile App have proved pivotal in navigating the healthcare landscape amidst Covid-19, thereby promoting affordable and accessible health care for all. Source: PIB
