Military Farms Closed After Century

Military farms have been an integral part of the Indian defense establishment for over a century, serving a critical role in ensuring the supply of fresh and hygienic milk to troops stationed across the country. These farms were established with the primary purpose of providing a reliable source of milk, which is an essential part of the soldiers’ diet. The first military farm was set up in 1889 in Allahabad, marking the beginning of a widespread network that would grow to serve the nutritional needs of India’s armed forces.

Establishment and Purpose

The inception of military farms can be traced back to the British colonial era when the need for a dedicated source of hygienic cow’s milk for the troops was identified. The British authorities, concerned with the health and well-being of their soldiers, decided to establish these farms to ensure a steady supply of quality milk. The first military farm in Allahabad set the precedent for subsequent farms, which were later established in various parts of India.

Growth and Expansion

Following Independence, the network of military farms saw considerable expansion. The farms thrived, becoming a significant part of the Indian military infrastructure. Over the years, they expanded their operations and by the time they were closed, they collectively produced approximately 3.5 crore litres of milk annually. In addition to milk, these farms also produced around 25,000 metric tonnes of hay per year, which was used for feeding the cattle within the farms and other livestock management purposes.

Operations and Contribution

The operations of military farms were not limited to just milk production; they played a broader role in the agricultural and dairy development within the military. These farms were equipped with advanced dairy technology and practices, often pioneering methods that would later be adopted in civilian dairy farming. They employed skilled workers, including veterinarians, dairy technologists, and farmhands, who maintained high standards of milk production and cattle care.

Impact on Troop Nutrition

The primary mission of military farms was to provide troops with a reliable and sanitary source of milk. This was especially important given the rigorous physical demands placed on soldiers and the need for a diet that supported their health and fitness. The production of milk by these farms had a significant impact on troop nutrition, as milk is a rich source of calcium, protein, and other vital nutrients.

Decline and Closure

Despite their long history and contributions, the relevance of military farms began to decline over time. The rapid pace of urbanisation and the emergence of a robust open market for dairy products reduced the military’s dependence on these dedicated farms. With the availability of commercial milk supply chains that could meet the demand for milk at competitive prices, the necessity of operating exclusive military dairy farms diminished.

End of an Era

The closure of military farms marked the end of an era in the history of the Indian armed forces. After more than a century of operation, these farms were shut down by the Indian Military. The decision to close them was influenced by a combination of factors, including changes in logistics, supply chain management, and the evolution of the dairy industry in India. The closure of these farms reflects a broader trend of modernization and adaptation within the military, as it continues to evolve to meet contemporary challenges and requirements.
