MNRE Releases Advisory on Rooftop Solar Scheme

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) recently issued an advisory concerning the rooftop solar scheme. The initiative aims to enhance the use and adoption of solar power by encouraging homeowners to install solar panels on their rooftops.

Objective of the Rooftop Solar Scheme

The purpose of the Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar Scheme (Phase II) is to reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based energy sources by installing solar panels on residential, community, industrial, and commercial establishments. The longer-term ambition of the initiative is to generate a cumulative capacity of 40,000 MW from these rooftop installations by 2022.

How it Works

In this scheme, a small Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) system is installed on the rooftop. This system generates DC power which is then converted into AC power by a power conditioning unit before being fed into the grid.

Benefits and Subsidies

This renewable energy programme offers several significant benefits. Apart from reducing reliance on traditional energy sources and promoting eco-friendly electricity generation, it also encourages investment from private sector, state governments and individuals in the solar sector. The MNRE provides a 40% subsidy for the first 3 kW and a 20% subsidy beyond 3 kW and up to 10 kW of solar panel capacity.

Private and Public Sector Implementation

Implementation of this scheme is undertaken by distribution companies (DISCOMs) in various states. The cost of the rooftop solar plant is borne by the residential consumer after accounting for the MNRE subsidy at the prescribed rate.

Other Schemes Promoting Solar Energy

Several other schemes, such as Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), Scheme for Development of Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Parks, National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy, Atal Jyoti Yojana (AJAY) are in place to further promote the use of solar energy.

Training Programmes and International Initiatives

In addition to these schemes, programmes such as Suryamitra Skill Development offer skill training for rural youth in handling solar installations. Furthermore, on an international level, initiatives like International Solar Alliance and One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG) have been launched to facilitate global cooperation and develop a global ecosystem of interconnected renewable energy resources.
