Mongolian President’s Visit Bolsters India-Mongolia Strategic Partnership

In a recent development, the President of Mongolia paid an official visit to India, highlighting not only the emphasis on expanding strategic alliances between the two nations but also their shared commitment to elevate their relationship from a strategic partnership to a spiritual kinship. The two nations have undertaken a unique step towards bolstering their relations by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) centered around space cooperation and disaster management. This initiative could usher in a new era in the India-Mongolia alliance.

The Scope of the Strategic Partnership

A joint statement regarding space cooperation has opened the doors to peaceful explorations of outer space between the two countries. This includes services related to remote sensing and weather forecasting for both nations. Additionally, assessment of the ongoing project for establishing a Cyber Security Training Centre in Mongolia, supported by India, was part of their discussion. A possible expansion of regular military exercises between India and Mongolia, known as “Nomadic Elephant” and “Khaan Quest”, was also deliberated upon.

Anniversaries and Milestones in India-Mongolia Relations

The year 2020 is an important milestone as it marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Mongolia. Their shared Buddhist heritage and civilization have created a strong bond between the two countries. These diplomatic relations took root in 1955 when Mongolia declared India as a “spiritual neighbour” and strategic partner.

Notable Moments in History

India and Mongolia, along with Bhutan, were co-sponsors of the renowned UN Resolution for recognizing Bangladesh as an independent nation in 1972. In 2015, during the 60th anniversary celebrations of the establishment of diplomatic relations, the Indian Prime Minister paid an official visit to Mongolia. This visit was the first of its kind in the history of India-Mongolia relations.

Support in International Forums

In various international forums and at the United Nations, Mongolia has traditionally supported India. In a significant show of support, Mongolia voted in favor of India’s proposal to include Yoga in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Additionally, Mongolia has publicly reiterated its support for India’s membership to the permanent seat of expanded UNSC.

Over the years, India has extended continued support to Mongolia in various sectors such as infrastructure development, health, education and employment opportunities.

The SAMVAAD dialogue, derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Samvadam’ meaning ‘Dialogue’, is an initiative that congregates Buddhist religious leaders, experts, and scholars from around the world. This conference encourages open and truthful global dialogue on issues related to conflicts and the environment.

General Assembly of Asian Buddhist Conference for Peace (ABCP)

Initiated in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in 1969-70, the ABCP is a voluntary movement comprising of both monks and followers of Lord Buddha. This conference aims to disseminate and implement the teachings of Buddha on peace, harmony, compassion, and loving-kindness for all sentient beings. The year 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of this assembly.
