Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere Reserve

Mura-Drava-Danube (MDD) is the world’s first five-country biosphere reserve spanning across Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia. It covers 700 km of the Mura, Drava and Danube rivers. Dubbed as the “Amazon of Europe”, this reserve is the largest riverine protected area in the continent.
The reserve has floodplain forests, gravel and sand banks, river islands, oxbows and meadows. It has the highest density of white-tailed eagle in Europe. It is home to some of the endangered species like the little tern, black stork, otters, beavers and sturgeons. It is a key resting and feeding place for more than 2.5 lakh migratory birds.
