Nag River

The Nag River runs through the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra. The river is part of the Kanhan Pench river system. The river is the main reason why the city was named Nagpur.

Highlights

The Nag River origination point is located in the lava hills. The exact starting location of this river is Lake Ambazari. The Pilli River is the main tributary of the Nag River. The point of end of the Nag River is the confluence with the River Kanhan.

In Pawagaon it flows into the Pioli River. And it flows into the Pora river which is located in Titur. After that, the Nag River joins the Kanhan River in Sawangi Village. The river is now heavily polluted as it functions as a drainage channel for the inhabitants of Nagpur. The river ecosystem has been severely damaged by urban debris from Nagpur.

In the year 2020, the High Court of Bombay ruled that this River was extremely polluted by urbanization and industrialization.

Rejuvenation of Nag River

Nag River’s rejuvenation was liquidated in the year 2019 at an estimated cost of Rs 2,434 crore rupees. Previously it was 1,476 crore rupees. The escalation of the project quote was due to late approval and GST. The central government’s share of the project is 60%. The state government has a 25% stake and the rest is shared by Nagpur Municipal Corporation. Japan International Cooperation Agency will approve long-term loans from the center and the state. Nag River?s rejuvenation also includes the River Pioli.

Revitalization of Nag River

In the year 2021, the Nag River Revitalization Project was approved by the Federal Cabinet. This project was proposed by the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highway. Approximately 2,117 crore rupees were allocated to the project. The project was given an eight year deadline. Within the scope of the project, sewage pipes and sewage treatment plants will be created. JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) is supposed to pay a loan to carry out the project. This project was approved under the National River Conservation Plan. This project will be carried out by the National River Conservation Department. This project will mainly reduce river pollution. This is achieved by reducing solid waste, untreated sewage and other pollutants that flow into the Nag River.
