The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has reported a significant discovery, made by its Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. An Earth-sized planet, named TOI 700 d, has been found in the star’s habitable zone, marking TESS’s first such finding since its 2018 launch. Discovering TOI 700 d
TOI 700 d, intriguingly, measures 20% larger than Earth. This planet orbits its star, TOI 700, once every 37 days. The star is an M dwarf situated just over 100 light-years away in the southern constellation Dorado. Comparatively, TOI 700 is about 40% of the Sun’s size and mass, with around half of its surface temperature.
Other Planets in the TOI 700 System
Interestingly, two other planets orbit the TOI 700 star. Firstly, TOI 700 b is almost identical to Earth in size and is believed to have a rocky surface. Its orbit around TOI 700 completes every 10 days. Secondly, TOI 700 c, the middle planet, is significantly larger than Earth (2.6 times) and presumed to be dominated by gas. It completes its orbit every 16 days.
The Significance of the Habitable Zone
TOI 700 d is the outermost planet in the TOI 700 system and notably, the only one found in the TOI 700’s habitable zone. Also known as the “Goldilocks zone,” this is the area around a star where the conditions are just right – not too hot and not too cold – for liquid water to exist on the surface of surrounding planets. Earth is in the Sun’s Goldilocks zone.
What We Know About M-dwarf Stars
TOI 700, around which TOI 700 d orbits, is identified as an M dwarf or M-type star, also known as a Red Dwarf Star. These stars are the most numerous in the universe and the smallest type of hydrogen-burning star, with masses ranging from about 0.08 to 0.6 times that of the Sun. Approximately three-fourths of the stars in the Milky Way Galaxy are red dwarfs.
