The National Youth Corps (NYC) is a flagship initiative of the Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Undertaken by the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), the NYC scheme was introduced under larger program named Rashtriya Yuva Sashaktikaran Karyakram Scheme. The primary objective of this initiative is to harness the potential of young citizens, mobilize their energy, and redirect it towards nation-building activities.
The NYC scheme brings together two formerly separate volunteer programs- National Service Volunteer (NSV) and the Rashtriya Sadbhawana Yojana (RSY).
Objectives of the NYC Scheme
The NYC scheme aims to foster a group of disciplined and dedicated youth who are driven by the desire to contribute to their nation’s progress.
The objectives of this nationwide initiative include facilitating inclusive growth, both socially and economically. The young volunteers act as points of information dissemination, providing basic knowledge to their respective communities. They play the role of group modulators and peer educators, helping influence behavior and attitude in their societies. Moreover, they set an example for younger people, particularly with regards to public ethics, dignity of work, and probity.
Features of the NYC Scheme
The NYC scheme offers opportunities to young men and women aged between 18 and 29. They can serve their community full time, for up to two years. During their service, they receive an honorarium of Rs 5000 per month.
Volunteers are selected through a rigorous process led by a selection committee helmed by the District Collector or Deputy Commissioner of the respective district. However, it’s noteworthy that these volunteer positions do not guarantee regular employment under the deploying agency or department. This initiative is completely funded by the Government of India.

NYKS’s Role in Youth Involvement
The NYKS is especially focused on identifying regions where youth power can be mobilized for development. To this end, it forms Youth Clubs at the village level, yielding voluntary action groups operating at the grassroots level. These clubs aim to involve youngsters in nation-building activities, thereby fostering their personal growth while also contributing to societal advancement.
