New Mandatory Energy Standards for Room ACs

The Indian Central Government, in association with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), has recently issued a new set of energy performance standards for Room Air Conditioners (RACs). The mandate, effective from the 1st of January, 2020, compels all room air conditioners under the BEE star-labelling program to maintain a default setting of 24C.

The Evolution of BEE’s Star Labelling Program for ACs

The star labelling program for fixed-speed room air conditioners was initially introduced by BEE on a voluntary basis in 2006. However, this program became obligatory from the 12th of January, 2009 onwards. Progressing further, in 2015, a voluntary star labelling program for inverter room air conditioners was launched. This too turned mandatory, but with effect from the 1st of January, 2018.

About The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency operates as a statutory body underneath the Indian Ministry of Power. The bureau is responsible for assisting in the formation of strategies and policies primarily aimed at reducing the energy intensity of the Indian economy. In order to execute the functions assigned to it under the energy conservation act, BEE collaborates with designated consumers, designated agencies, and various other organizations to locate and utilize the existing resources and infrastructure.

Towards a More Energy-Efficient India

Both the Central Government and BEE are consistently working towards making India more energy-efficient. The new energy performance standards for RACs is one of many steps in this direction. Encouraging manufacturers and consumers to adopt these standards will not only lead to significant energy savings but also aid in environmental preservation by reducing the carbon footprint.
