Pamban Bridge

Pamban Bridge

The new Pamban Bridge, engineering feat, connects mainland India to Rameswaram Island in Tamil Nadu. This modern structure, measuring 2.05 kilometres, drastically reduces train travel time across the sea. Previously, trains took 25-30 minutes to cross the old bridge. Now, the journey will take less than five minutes. The bridge is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon.

Key Features of the New Bridge

  • The new Pamban Bridge is Asia’s first vertical lift bridge.
  • It allows for a maximum train speed of 75 km/h, an improvement from the 10 km/h limit of the old bridge.
  • The bridge has been designed for a speed of 80 km/h, with the vertical lift section allowing trains to travel at 50 km/h.

Construction and Technology

Construction began in February 2020 after PM Modi laid the foundation stone in November 2019. The project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The bridge features advanced technology, including an electromechanical system for lifting. This system can be operated by a single person and takes five minutes to lift.

Safety and Design Considerations

Safety certifications have been obtained, and trials have been successfully completed. The design includes 100 spans of 18.3 metres and one navigational span of 63 metres. The new bridge is 3 metres higher than the old one, providing a navigational air clearance of 22 metres above sea level.

Impact on Train Services

The old Pamban Bridge was closed in 2022, forcing trains to terminate at Mandapam, 17 km from Rameswaram. The new bridge will restore direct train services to Rameswaram, enhancing connectivity to this pilgrimage and tourist destination.

Future of the Old Bridge

There are discussions regarding the fate of the 111-year-old Pamban Bridge once the new structure is operational. The old bridge served as the only connection to Rameswaram until a road bridge was built in 1988.

Environmental and Operational Considerations

The lifting mechanism of the new bridge cannot operate when wind speeds exceed 58 km/h, a common occurrence during certain months. The substructure is designed to accommodate double lines, enhancing future capacity.

Economic and Cultural Significance

The new bridge will facilitate improved transport links, boosting tourism and the local economy. It will also serve as a vital connection for pilgrims visiting Rameswaram, a site of religious importance.
