NHAI Plans 10,000 km Optic Fibre Infrastructure by 2025

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has recently declared its intent to construct approximately 10,000 km of Optic Fibre Cable (OFC) infrastructure across the nation by the financial year 2025. This project is in tune with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations, aiming to ensure access to safe, affordable, accessible, and sustainable transport systems for everyone by the year 2030.

Understanding Optic Fibre Cable (OFC)

OFCs are essentially tubes containing minuscule wires made from either glass or plastic material. These cables utilize light to transmit data at a speed that is significantly faster than conventional wires that rely on electricity. The use of metal wires is common in optical fibre communication as they ensure less damage while transmitting signals.

Optical fibres operate based on the principle of total internal reflection (TIR). TIR indicates the full reflection of light rays within a medium like water or glass from the encompassing surfaces back into the medium. These light rays can carry an enormous amount of data in the case of a long straight wire without any bends. If there’s a bend, optical cables are specifically designed to direct all the light rays inward using TIR.

Development of the OFC Network

The National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), an entirely owned special purpose vehicle (SPV) of NHAI, will be responsible for the development of the OFC network. It will facilitate the creation of Digital Highways by establishing integrated utility corridors along the National Highways for the OFC infrastructure.

Around 1,367 km on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and 512 km on the Hyderabad-Bangalore Corridor have been identified as pilot routes for this Digital Highway development. Providing internet connectivity to remote locations nationwide, the OFC network will expedite the introduction of new telecom technologies like 5G & 6G.

Introduction to Digital Highways

Digital Highways or Roads are digital platforms that provide shared public and private services. They leverage data, technology, and connectivity to enhance the Strategic Road Network (SRN) in terms of design, construction, operation, and usage. The outcome of this initiative would be safer travel, quicker deliveries, and improved experiences for everyone.

About National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)

Established under the NHAI Act, 1988, the NHAI has been assigned the National Highways Development Project (NHDP) along with other minor projects for development, maintenance, and management. Commenced in 1998, the NHDP is a program aimed at upgrading, rehabilitating, and widening major highways in India to meet better standards.

The primary vision of NHAI is to cater to the nation’s requirements for the establishment and maintenance of a National Highways network conforming to global standards. It aims to meet user expectations in the most time-bound and cost-effective manner, thereby promoting the economic wellbeing and enhancing the quality of life of the people.
