Odisha Forest Officials to Preserve New Gecko Species

The recent news has drawn attention to the efforts of Odisha’s forest officials who have implemented strategies aimed at preserving a newly discovered minuscule species of gecko under the genus Hemiphyllodactylus. This announcement has opened up an interesting discussion about these intriguing creatures, their background, and their significance in the ecosystem.

Introduction to the New Gecko Species

First sighted in Ganjam district, Odisha, in 2014, this new addition to the Hemiphyllodactylus genus has been named Hemiphyllodactylus minimus. With a maximum body measurement of barely over six cm, this gecko is the tiniest member of its genus and has earned the name Ganjam Slender Gecko.

Interestingly, this gecko is the seventh Indian species of its genus, coming as the second from the northern Eastern Ghats and spectacularly marking itself as the 41st globally. It holds the unique distinction of being the first non-island species of its genus, populating lowland habitats.

Understanding Geckos

Geckos fall under the category of reptiles and can be found on every continent barring Antarctica. These vibrant lizards have displayed remarkable adaptability, making homes in diverse habitats ranging from rainforests and deserts to frosty mountain slopes.

Most gecko species are nocturnal creatures, meaning they are most active during the night. However, day geckos buck this trend and are active during daylight hours, feeding on insects, fruits, and flower nectar.

Geckos are spread across a total of six families: Carphodactylidae, Diplodactylidae, Eublepharidae, Gekkonidae, Phyllodactylidae, and Sphaerodactylidae.

Other Indian Gecko Species

The Indian Golden Gecko, a member of the Gekkonidae family, is a native species found in Tamil Nadu, Orissa, and Andhra Pradesh. It is listed in Schedule 1 of WPA (Wildlife Protection Act) and is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List.

Another notable gecko, the Tokay Gecko which also belongs to the Gekkonidae family, has a widespread presence in the Indo-Malayan region. Its protection status is covered under Schedule 4 of the WPA and it, too, is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List.

Importance of Preservation Efforts

The preservation efforts directed towards the newly discovered Hemiphyllodactylus minimus are not just important for maintaining biodiversity, but also for the potential insights such discoveries can provide into the complex world of reptiles. Each new discovery enriches our collective understanding of nature, helping us appreciate these creatures’ role in our ecosystem while paving the way for future research and conservation measures.
