Odisha Government to Launch Puri Heritage Corridor Project

The Odisha Government’s anticipation of laying the foundation stone for the Puri heritage corridor has recently drawn the attention of news outlets. Costing Rs 800 crore, this initiative forms part of the Augmentation of Basic Amenities and Development of Heritage and Architecture (ABADHA) scheme. The broader objective of the project is to develop Puri as a globally recognized heritage city.

Puri Heritage Corridor Project: An Overview

Originally conceived in 2016, the Puri Heritage Corridor Project was officially unveiled in December 2019. The main aim is to transform the holy town of Puri into an internationally recognized place of heritage. A substantial portion of the project will involve redeveloping significant areas within the holy town and those surrounding the Jagannath temple. These changes are noticeably intended to enhance visitors’ and tourists’ experiences.

The renovation plans consist of several key features. Among these are the redevelopment of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) building, the establishment of a 600-capacity Srimandir reception centre, and the creation of a Jagannath cultural centre. Additionally, the project will result in a revamped Badadanda heritage streetscape, beachfront development, and the restoration of Puri lake and the Musa river.

About Jagannath Temple

Jagannath Temple’s history traces back to the 12th century. King Anatavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty is commonly believed to have constructed it. The temple is also known as ‘Yamanika Tirtha’ due to its mythological significance. According to Hindu beliefs, the god of death, ‘Yama’, holds no power here because of Lord Jagannath’s presence.

Often referred to as the “White Pagoda”, the temple forms part of the Char Dham pilgrimages, which also include Badrinath, Dwaraka, and Rameswaram. The temple houses four gates – the primary eastern ‘Singhdwara’ gate, graced by two crouching lions, as well as the southern ‘Ashwadwara’, the western ‘Vyaghra Dwara’, and the northern ‘Hastidwara’. Each gate is adorned with a distinct carving. Moreover, facing the entrance is the Aruna stambha or sun pillar, which was initially stationed at the Sun Temple in Konark.

The temple also plays host to the globally renowned Rath Yatra (Car Festival) & Bahuda Yatra festival.

Other Significant Monuments in Odisha

Apart from the Jagannath Temple, Odisha houses several other noteworthy monuments. These include the Konark Sun Temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tara Tarini Temple, Lingaraj Temple, and the Udaygiri and Khandagiri Caves.

With its rich history and plans for redevelopment, Odisha continues to be an area of interest for both local and international audiences, contributing significantly towards maintaining India’s cultural heritage.
