The Odisha government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, has initiated the EKAMRA project with an investment of Rs 280 crore. This ambitious plan aims to enhance the surroundings of the 11th-century Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar. By focusing on the development of the ancient temple and its adjacent areas, the government aims to preserve the historical and cultural significance of this revered site.
Revitalizing Bhubaneswar’s Heritage Precinct
The EKAMRA project, launched in 2019, targets the revitalization of approximately 80 acres of land surrounding the Lingaraj Temple. This area, known as the Ekamra Kshetra, holds immense historical importance and is home to numerous ancient temples, holy tanks, and water bodies. The project’s primary objective is to recreate the magnificence of this heritage precinct and ensure its preservation for future generations.
Phased Approach for Restoration and Development
The EKAMRA project follows a phased approach to restore and develop the heritage precinct. In the first phase, the focus is on restoring the architectural and archaeological heritage sites. Additionally, a 12-meter-wide mixed traffic road will be created to improve vehicular movement, while a 4-10 meter walkway will facilitate smooth pedestrian flow around the shrine.
Enhanced Facilities and Amenities
To enhance the overall experience for visitors and devotees, the EKAMRA plan includes the development of parking facilities, inter-connected landscaped open spaces, and a temple facility. An information and control center will also be established to cater to emergency services. These initiatives will create safe gathering areas and ensure the convenience of visitors.
Preserving Bhubaneswar’s Ancient Heritage
The EKAMRA project is a testament to the Odisha government’s commitment to preserve and revive the ancient heritage precinct of Bhubaneswar. By restoring and enhancing the Lingaraj Temple and its surrounding areas, the government aims to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the region and attract tourists from across the globe.
The Significance of Lingaraj Temple
The Lingaraj Temple, the largest temple in Bhubaneswar, is a masterpiece of the Kalinga School of Temple Architecture. It holds a prominent place in the history and religious beliefs of the people of Odisha. The temple’s location on the western banks of Bindusagar Lake adds to its serene and spiritual ambiance. The nearby Ekamra Van, a beautiful garden named after the Hindu texts, further enhances the overall experience for visitors.
Preserving the Syncretism of Shaivism and Vaishnavism
The Lingaraj Temple symbolizes the harmonious coexistence of Shaivism and Vaishnavism sects in Odisha. This syncretism is an important aspect of the state’s cultural heritage. By preserving and promoting the Lingaraj Temple, the EKAMRA project aims to celebrate this unique blend of religious traditions.
