One Planet Summit 2021

France recently hosted the One Planet Summit, 2021. During the summit, around 50 countries committed to protect the 30% of the planet. They committed to protect the land as well as the sea area in the next decade. This would help in slowing down the species extinction and addressing the climate change issues. The summit was organized with the aim of protecting the world’s biodiversity. During the summit, the US officials and the leaders of Russia, India and Brazil were absent. The Summit was organized with the Theme: Let’s act together for nature.

Highlights

• The one-day summit was organised with the focused on four major topics:

1. Protection of the terrestrial and marine ecosystems;
2. Promotion of the agroecology
3. To increase the funding so as to protect biodiversity and
4. To identify the links between deforestation and the health of humans and animals.

• A program called PREZODE was also launched on the occasion. This programme is an unprecedented international initiative that seeks to prevent the emergence of zoonotic diseases and pandemics.

One Planet Summit

• It is an international event that is organised with the focus on biodiversity so as to mobilize the commitments of protecting the ecosystems. It also makes links with the human health.
• The summit is organised with the aim of promoting the worldwide ecological transformation.
• It also measures the environmental and climate protection with respect to the innovation and economy.

First One Planet Summit

The first One Planet Summit was organized in the year 2017. This was organized two years later the historic Paris Agreement. In the year 2017, the summit had adopted twelve international commitments:

1. To respond to the Extreme Events in Island states.
2. To protect the land and water against climate change.
3. To Mobilize the researchers and young people so as to work for the climate.
4. Public procurement and access for local government to meet the green financing.
5. To attain the Zero emission targets.
6. To make a sectoral shift towards a decarbonized economy.
7. To make Zero-pollution transport a reality.
8. To work towards achieving a carbon price which is compatible with the Paris Agreement
9. To anchor the climate issues at centre of decisions of financial actors.
10. To Internationally mobilize the development banks
11. To meet the Commitment by sovereign funds.
12. To Mobilizing institutional investors.

Significance of the summit

The One Planet Summit will help in transforming the value chains, consumption habits and business models. The need for doing the same was felt in the aftermath of Covid-19 pandemic. Further, United states has withdrawn from the Paris Agreement. Thus, it becomes important to other organisation to act swiftly which can be better achieved with the help of this summit.
