Opportunities for Indian Students in France

During his visit to France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a significant policy change that grants Indian students pursuing a master’s degree in the country an extended post-study visa of five years, replacing the previous two-year provision. This decision aims to enhance opportunities for Indian students, strengthen the India-France partnership, and promote educational exchanges between the two nations.

France as a Preferred Destination for International Students:

France is ranked among the top five preferred destinations for international students, following the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia. Its renowned higher education institutions, diverse academic programs, and vibrant cultural landscape make it an attractive choice for students seeking quality education and enriching experiences.

Expanding Post-Study Work Opportunities:

Previously, Indian students studying in France were granted a two-year post-study work visa. However, the recent policy change now extends the post-study visa duration to five years. This expansion offers Indian students the opportunity to explore career prospects, gain professional experience, and contribute to the global workforce after completing their master’s degree.

Strengthening the India-France Partnership:

The decision to extend post-study visas aligns with the efforts to strengthen the India-France partnership. France is home to a significant number of immigrants from India, estimated at approximately 65,000. By fostering educational exchanges and providing enhanced opportunities for Indian students, the partnership between the two countries deepens, paving the way for collaboration in various domains.

France’s Attractiveness for International Students:

French higher education attracts a considerable number of students, with approximately 2.7 million enrolled, out of which 14 percent are international students. The diverse academic landscape and the availability of programs in various fields make France an appealing destination for students worldwide, including a substantial number from India.

Popular Fields of Study for Indian Students:

Among Indian students studying in France, management programs are particularly popular, with over 70 percent of Indian students enrolled in such programs. French business schools and management institutes are renowned globally, attracting students who seek to acquire specialized knowledge and skills in this field. The extended post-study visa will enable Indian students to explore career opportunities in the business and management sectors.

Increasing Number of Indian Students in France:

The academic year 2021-2022 recorded approximately 6,000 Indian students studying in France, based on official data collected post-Covid. With the policy change and the commitment of both countries to promoting educational exchanges, it is expected that the number of Indian students in France will increase significantly in the coming years.

Future Goals:

Inviting 20,000 Indian Students by 2025 France has set an ambitious target of inviting 20,000 Indian students to the country by 2025, as announced by Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna. This goal signifies the commitment of both countries to foster educational collaborations and create a vibrant environment for Indian students to pursue their academic and professional aspirations.
