Lastly, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) was established in the 1960s with the objective of achieving ‘Total security preparedness’ for remote border areas.
The History and Evolution of CRPF
Initially constituted as the Crown Representative Police in 1939 under British rule, the CRPF was renamed post-Independence by an Act of Parliament on December 28, 1949. Since then, it has continued its mission to uphold the supremacy of the Constitution and maintain Rule of Law, Public Order, and Internal Security efficiently.
Significant Contributions of CRPF
The force has made significant contributions during the integration of princely States into the Indian Union, especially in disciplining those that were rebellious. The princely States of Junagarh and the small principality of Kathiawar in Gujarat, who initially declined to join the Indian Union, are cases in point where CRPF played an instrumental role in smooth amalgamation.
Varied Duties Performed by the CRPF
The responsibilities of the Central Reserve Police Force extend beyond traditional security roles. Riot control is a key duty, as is counter militancy and insurgency operations. The force is also involved in dealing with Left Wing Extremism and protecting VIPs and vital installations. In addition, it ensures environmental safeguarding by protecting local flora and fauna.
