Pampaphoneus biccai

Pampaphoneus biccai

An international research team has unveiled a remarkable discovery in Brazil – a 265-million-year-old fossil belonging to the species Pampaphoneus biccai. This ancient creature was part of the early therapsid clade known as Dinocephalians, which existed just before the Earth’s largest mass extinction event. Dinocephalians were significant terrestrial animals before the extinction, featuring medium to large-sized members with carnivorous and herbivorous representatives. They were recognized for their thick cranial bones, which inspired their name, meaning “terrible head” in Greek. While dinocephalians are well-documented in South Africa and Russia, Pampaphoneus biccai represents the only known species of its kind in Brazil, shedding light on the country’s pre-extinction terrestrial fauna.
