Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the ‘Asom Mala’ programme in Dhekiajuli of Sonitpur district of Assam. He also laid the foundation stone of two hospitals in the state.

- The project is unique as it emphasizes effective maintenance through continuous field data collection and its linkage with the Road Asset Management System (ROMS).
- He also laid the foundation stones for two medical colleges and hospitals in the Charaideo and Biswanath districts of the state.
- These medical colleges and hospitals will boost the health infrastructure of the state.
- The total cost of setting up two medical colleges and hospitals at Charaideo and Biswanath will be estimated at more than Rs 1,100 crores.
- Each hospital will have a 100 MBBS seat capacity and a 500-bed capacity.
With this increase in the number of hospitals and medical colleges, the problem of the shortage of doctors in the state will be solved and it will also make Assam a hub for medical education and tertiary care for the entire North-Eastern region.
