The Indian government has recently approved the PM-PRANAM scheme, a new initiative aimed at incentivizing states to promote alternative fertilizers and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. This scheme, along with the continuation of the urea subsidy scheme, showcases the government’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and self-sufficiency in urea production.
PM-PRANAM Scheme:
Promoting Sustainable Agriculture The Cabinet’s approval of the PM-PRANAM scheme marks an important step towards sustainable agriculture practices in India. The scheme, announced as part of the Union Budget 2023-24, aims to reduce the reliance on chemical fertilizers by providing incentives to states.
Urea Subsidy Scheme Continuation:
To ensure the availability and affordability of urea for farmers, the current urea subsidy scheme will be continued for three more years, ending in March 2025. The scheme includes an outlay of Rs 3.68 lakh crore, demonstrating the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and reducing import dependency for urea.
Revival of Urea Production Units:

This strategic move aims to reduce import dependency and make India self-sufficient in urea production by 2025-26. By promoting domestic production, the government aims to enhance agricultural productivity and minimize reliance on imports.
Introducing Sulphur-Coated Urea:
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the introduction of sulphur-coated urea, also known as Urea Gold, in the country. This type of urea addresses sulphur deficiency in the soil, offering a more efficient and economical alternative to conventional urea. Sulphur-coated urea has a nitrogen absorption efficiency of 78%, surpassing other varieties of urea.
Market Development Assistance for Organic Fertilizers:
To promote organic fertilizers and support the marketing of by-products from Biogas Plants/Compressed Biogas (CBG) Plants, the Cabinet has approved ?1,451.84 crore for Market Development Assistance (MDA). Under this scheme, a subsidy of ?1,500 per tonne will be provided, incentivizing the use of organic fertilizers and contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.
Increasing Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP):
The Cabinet has also increased the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) by Rs 10 to Rs 315 per quintal for the upcoming 2023-24 sugarcane season. This step aims to ensure fair compensation for sugarcane farmers and boost their income, promoting agricultural growth and rural development.
