PM PRANAM Initiative

The PM PRANAM initiative is a proposed program aimed at reducing the use of chemical fertilisers in India and minimising the burden of fertiliser subsidies faced by the government. The initiative aims to promote the use of alternative fertilisers and encourage states and union territories to use chemical fertilisers sparingly.

Purpose of the PM PRANAM initiative

The primary goal of the PM PRANAM initiative is to reduce the dependence on chemical fertilisers in agriculture and to promote the use of alternative fertilisers such as organic fertilisers, vermicompost, and bio-fertilisers. The use of chemical fertilisers has led to soil degradation, water pollution, and a decline in soil fertility. The government hopes that this initiative will help to reduce the negative impact of chemical fertilisers on the environment and promote sustainable agriculture practices.

Incentives for States and Union Territories

The PM PRANAM initiative will provide incentives to states and union territories that promote the use of alternative fertilisers and encourage farmers to reduce the use of chemical fertilisers. The government is expected to provide financial support to states and union territories to help them implement the initiative effectively. This financial support may be in the form of subsidies, tax incentives, and other support measures.

Reducing the Burden of Fertiliser Subsidies

One of the key objectives of the PM PRANAM initiative is to reduce the burden of fertiliser subsidies faced by the government. In 2022-2023, the government incurred around Rs. 2.25 lakh crore in fertiliser subsidies, which is 39% higher than the 2021-2022 figure of Rs. 1.62 lakh crore. By reducing the dependence on chemical fertilisers and promoting alternative fertilisers, the government hopes to reduce the subsidy burden and achieve more sustainable agriculture practices.
