PMMVY Maternity Scheme Crosses 1 Crore Beneficiaries

The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) proudly announces a triumphant milestone. More than one crore beneficiaries have benefitted from this scheme as of today, with an overall disbursement surpassing Rs. 4,000 crores. This maternity benefit programme, active since 1st January, 2017, has been spreading its wings across all districts of the country.

About the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)

The Ministry of Women and Child Development executes the PMMVY as a centrally sponsored scheme. The primary objective of this scheme is to provide cash benefits directly to pregnant women and lactating mothers (PW & LM) excluding those who work in regular employment in the Central Government or the State Governments or PSUs or receive similar benefits under any law. The target beneficiaries must have their pregnancy on or after 1st January 2017 and apply for the first child in the family.

The Benefits

Under PMMVY, beneficiaries receive a cash benefit of Rs. 5,000 in three installments upon meeting certain conditions. These include early registration of pregnancy, ante-natal check-up, registration of the child’s birth, and completion of the first cycle of vaccinations. They also receive a cash incentive under Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), which means, on average, a woman can obtain Rs. 6,000.

Unique Features of PMMVY

Both the central and state governments closely monitor the scheme’s implementation via PMMVY- Common Application Software (PMMVY-CAS). This web-based software allows tracking of each beneficiary’s status, encouraging swift, accountable, and improved grievance redressal.

About Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY)

The JSY, similar to the PMMVY, is a 100% centrally sponsored scheme, aiming at decreasing maternal and infant mortality by promoting institutional delivery among pregnant women. It operates under the National Health Mission (NHM). Pregnant women are eligible for cash assistance regardless of their age and number of children if they give birth in a government or accredited private health facility. In addition, ASHAs are provided performance-based incentives for promoting institutional delivery among these women. Special focus is on poor pregnant women in low institutional delivery rate states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Assam, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Jammu and Kashmir, termed Low Performing States (LPS) under the scheme.
