Pope Francis Declares Devasahayam Pillai a Saint

The news from The Vatican has recently been abuzz due to the canonization of Devasahayam Pillai by Pope Francis, making him the first Indian layman to achieve sainthood. Born in the 18th century, Devasahayam Pillai was known for his conversion to Christianity during the years of the Kingdom of Travancore. The Vatican decided to honor him with sainthood due to what they referred to as his ‘enduring increasing hardships.’

Who was Devasahayam Pillai?

Born on April 23, 1712, in Nattalam village located in the Kanyakumari district, Devasahayam converted to Christianity in 1745 and took the name Lazarus, which means ‘God is my help.’ This switch of faith, however, was not well-accepted by the leaders of his former religion. False accusations of treason and espionage were leveled against him, ultimately leading to him being stripped of his position within the royal administration.

Despite these trials, Devasahayam emerged as a strong voice against caste discrimination, which was rampant during those times, only to face further persecution and eventual death.

The Martyrdom of Devasahayam Pillai

On January 14, 1752, Devasahayam was ruthlessly murdered in the Aralvaimozhy forest. The regard for him as a martyr grew posthumously, and his remains were buried in what today stands as Saint Francis Xavier’s Cathedral in Kottar, Nagercoil. After a thorough examination in 2012, The Vatican acknowledged his martyrdom.

Why Devasahayam Pillai was declared a Saint

Devasahayam Pillai was known for championing equality and opposing harmful societal norms such as casteism and communalism. The timing of his canonization comes at a crucial period, as India grapples with a rise in communal tension. By declaring Devasahayam a saint, the Church is strategically placing itself in opposition to the prevalent social ill of communalism.

Communalism—defined as blind loyalty to one’s religious community—is often used as a tool to mobilize people either for or against societal services. It is closely related to dogmatism and religious fundamentalism. By honoring Devasahayam Pillai with sainthood, the Church is using its influence to combat these divisive ideologies.

The canonization of Devasahayam Pillai by Pope Francis is a historic event that resonates not only within the Catholic Church but also across India. His life serves as an epitome of courage, sacrifice, and an uncompromising stand against social injustices. Even centuries after his death, Devasahayam’s life and work continue to inspire, symbolizing a beacon of hope against the backdrop of oppressive communal forces.
